FYI: the wife had a great idea...like a thai curry add some veggies! My current favorite is green and yellow beens. Broccoli, sugar/snap peas or peas would be great too. I guess carrots, but I am not a fan of them.

Go nuts with sprouts, jullian asian cabbage or even celery (blah, i hate celery, so do it thin, not to over-power).

I did not have any cumin, but i did create a wonderful substitution. In a stone Mortar & Pestle smash up some corriander seeds, cumin seeds, then go wild and add some ground corriander (which really is cumin) and lastly a healthy dash of lemon grass powder. Wow that was great!

My goal for this project is to have a cd or floppy based firewall that will save preferences to a usb drive. I am try to get a low power solution with the reliability of an off the shelf firewall/router. I also need to take advantage of my 5 ip addresses and want to spread out my web servers over the 5 ip's for better SEO.

I was busy last night downloading many different distros. I am sad to say that i was able to get very few running quickly.

vyatta - vyatta.com
PCLinuxOS MiniMe 2008 - pendrivelinux.com (I could not find this in the pclinuxos.com web site!?!)
smoothwall - smoothwall.org
m0n0wall - m0n0.ch
mandriva - mandriva.com
Devil-Linux - Devil-Linux.org

Didn't try (But will add to my list...):
PCLinuxOS - PCLinuxOS.com
Knoppix - knopper.net
Linux Live-CD Router - wifi.com.ar
XORP - xorp.org

The distro's I had the most success with were Mandriva and PCLinuxOS MiniMe (Pen drive version). The pendrivelinux.com article on creating the usb version was flawless and I had my main computer booting off that image in less than 30 minutes. I had to rule out the PCLinuxOS right away, however when I discovered that the 3 systems I had ready to be a firewall could not usb boot! Mandriva booted right up on all three from the CD and gave a nice GUI (too vista like for me, but that can be tweaked).

I ruled out smoothwall, since I thought it was a LiveCD and it then asked to reformat my HD during the install, which promptly caused me to hit the power button. This distro does have nice features including web management from the my.smoothwall.org site, we haven't seen this, for free, since redhat.

Devil-Linux and vyatta were command line down and dirty Distros. I will shelve them for now, since I do not have all the time in the world to learn their approach. m0n0wall booted very quickly and appeared promising, but it could not load the on board network card of my desktop machine. I will need to try it with the intended systems next.

I will continue to search web sites like DistrWatch.com and http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php

Well I have run/installed all but the LinuxMCE (primarily since I forgot about that one).

I decided to take another tack. The strong point of those CD's is that you can use them as MythTV frontends. As servers they don't work well. My Dell Dimension 8100 with NVidea video is supported only by the full install, I could not get any of the CD's to launch an X window. (I should try again now that I have a really simple ATI PCI card.)

I opted for Fedora 7, since 8 just came out and loaded the MythTV via Yum and all went...smooth enough. I have yet to get the TV guide to connect to yet another provider. Worst of all my favorite MythTV plugin, MythWeather is not working and is known to be broken since MSNBC changed their weather feed format. Why didn't the developer use weather.com!!!! Two bucks says i will end up fixing that for everyone.

I will post a review and comments on my PVR Server Setup.
